The Best Summer in Cape May Starts Here

Summer in Cape May is unlike anywhere else on the Jersey Shore. While other beach towns fill up with boardwalk rides and arcade noise, Cape May offers something richer: a calendar packed with world-class jazz, celebrated food and wine events, free outdoor concerts, art walks, and the kind of Fourth of July fireworks that reflect off the Atlantic in a way you'll remember for years.

This guide covers every major event from Memorial Day through Labor Day 2026 — bookmark it, share it, and use it to plan the summer you've been waiting for.

Memorial Day Weekend (May 23–26, 2026)

Memorial Day is Cape May's unofficial season opener. The Memorial Day Weekend guide covers everything in detail, but the highlights are the VFW Post 386 Memorial Day Parade down Beach Avenue, the opening of the Cape May Lighthouse for the season, and the first Sunset Beach flag ceremony of the year. Most restaurants, shops, and beach badge sales begin Memorial Day weekend — it's the moment Cape May comes fully alive after the quiet spring.

Beach badges go on sale Memorial Day weekend. See our Cape May beach badge guide for current prices, hours, and where to buy.

June: Jazz, Food & Wine, and the Start of Summer

Cape May Jazz Festival (June 2026)

The Cape May Jazz Festival is one of the most celebrated music events on the East Coast. Held twice a year (spring and fall), the June edition features world-class jazz performers at venues across town — Congress Hall, the Carriage House, and intimate outdoor stages. Tickets sell out months in advance; book early.

Cape May Food & Wine Weekend

Chefs, sommeliers, and food lovers descend on Cape May for a weekend of tastings, cooking demonstrations, and wine pairings at the area's finest restaurants. The event typically takes place in mid-June and is hosted by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC). Check their website for the 2026 lineup and ticket packages.

Free Summer Concerts Begin

Starting in June, free outdoor concerts take place regularly at Rotary Park and the Cape May Convention Hall lawn. Bring a lawn chair or blanket — these are beloved community events that draw locals and visitors alike. Check the City of Cape May events calendar for the full schedule.

July: Fourth of July and Peak Summer

Fourth of July Fireworks

Cape May's Fourth of July fireworks display over the Atlantic Ocean is one of the most spectacular on the Jersey Shore. The show is typically launched from the beach near Convention Hall and reflects off the water in a way that's impossible to replicate inland. Arrive early to claim your spot on the beach — the area fills up by early evening. Pair it with a sunset dinner at one of the best restaurants on the Washington Street Mall.

Cape May Music Festival

The Cape May Music Festival runs throughout July and into August, featuring classical and chamber music performances at historic venues including the Cape May Convention Hall and local churches. Organized by MAC, the festival brings professional musicians from across the country for an intimate concert experience unlike anything you'd find at a larger venue. Visit capemaymac.org for the 2026 program.

Whale & Dolphin Watching Season Peaks

July is prime season for whale and dolphin watching off Cape May. Bottlenose dolphins are nearly guaranteed on every trip, and humpback and fin whale sightings increase significantly through the summer. Cape May Whale Watcher runs multiple daily departures from Miss Chris Marina. Book in advance — peak season boats fill up.

August: Art, History & Late Summer Events

Cape May Art League Summer Show

The Cape May Art League hosts its annual summer exhibition featuring works by local and regional artists. The show is held at the Art League Gallery on Washington Street and is free to attend. It's a wonderful way to discover Cape May's thriving arts community and take home a piece of the town's character.

Victorian Week Preview Events

While Victorian Week officially runs in October, August brings preview events including historic house tours, trolley rides through the Victorian neighborhoods, and behind-the-scenes tours of the Emlen Physick Estate. These are organized by MAC and are a great way to experience Cape May's architectural heritage without the October crowds.

Cape May Craft Beer, Music & Crab Festival

Typically held in late August, this festival combines local craft beer from Cape May Brewing Company and other regional breweries with live music and a blue claw crab feast. It's one of the most popular late-summer events and tickets sell out quickly. Check the Cape May Brewing Company website for 2026 dates.

Labor Day Weekend (August 29 – September 1, 2026)

Labor Day weekend is the emotional close of summer in Cape May — and locals will tell you it's actually one of the best weekends of the year. The crowds thin slightly from peak July, the water is at its warmest, and the town has a bittersweet end-of-summer energy that's uniquely Cape May. The Sunset Beach flag ceremony takes on special significance this weekend, and many restaurants offer end-of-season specials.

As any local will tell you (see our You Know You're a Cape May Local If… guide), September is actually the best-kept secret of the Cape May calendar — quieter, warmer water, and all the restaurants still open.

Planning Tips for Summer 2026

Book accommodations early. Summer weekends in Cape May sell out months in advance. If you're planning a July Fourth or Jazz Festival visit, book your Cape May B&B or hotel now.

Get your beach badges. Required Memorial Day through Labor Day. Day badges are available at beach entrances; season badges offer better value for multiple visits.

Check MAC's calendar. The Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities is the single best source for Cape May events — they organize the Jazz Festival, Music Festival, Victorian Week, and dozens of smaller events throughout the summer.

Parking. Arrive before 9 AM on summer weekends or use the West End Garage on Lafayette Street. The free lots fill up fast on peak days.

The Bottom Line

Cape May's summer calendar is one of the richest of any small town in America. Whether you're here for world-class jazz, Fourth of July fireworks, free beach concerts, or simply the best seafood on the Jersey Shore, there's something happening every weekend from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Bookmark this guide, check back as new events are announced, and make 2026 your best Cape May summer yet.
