We Tried Every BYOB Restaurant in Cape May in One Weekend — Here's the Honest Ranking
The idea started as a joke. My partner and I were planning our annual Cape May weekend when I said, half-seriously, "What if we just tried every BYOB restaurant in town?" Twenty-four hours later, we had a spreadsheet, a reservation at Grana BYOB that had taken three weeks to secure, and a very ambitious itinerary.
Cape May has more exceptional BYOB restaurants per square mile than almost anywhere in New Jersey. Thanks to the state's no-corkage-fee law, you can bring a $40 bottle of Burgundy to a Michelin-caliber meal and pay nothing extra for the privilege. It's one of the town's best-kept secrets — and after this weekend, we're ready to rank them all.
A quick note on methodology: we visited seven restaurants over two days (Friday dinner through Sunday brunch), ordered at least two courses at each, and brought a different bottle to every meal. We're not professional food critics — just two people who love Cape May and eat out a lot. These are honest opinions.
The Ranking
1. Grana BYOB — The Undisputed Champion
[Grana BYOB](https://granabyob.com/) on South Broadway is, without question, the best restaurant in Cape May. We knew this going in — it's been #1 on TripAdvisor for years — but experiencing it firsthand is something else entirely. Chef Carl Messick's seasonal tasting menu changes constantly, but our five-course dinner included a seared duck breast with cherry gastrique that stopped conversation at the table. The room seats only 68 people, which means every dish gets the attention it deserves.
We brought a 2019 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir that paired beautifully with the duck. The server noticed the label, mentioned she'd had it before, and spent five minutes talking us through the pairing logic. That's the Grana experience: exceptional food, genuine hospitality, and a BYOB policy that turns dinner into a collaboration.
Verdict: Book three weeks in advance. Bring your best bottle. It's worth every penny.

2. 410 Bank Street — The Most Unique Experience
[410 Bank Street](https://www.410bankstreet.com/) is unlike any other restaurant in Cape May. Set inside a vine-covered 1840 carriage house on — you guessed it — Bank Street, it serves what chef Henry Sing Cheng calls "New World cuisine": a rotating menu of exotic dishes influenced by New Orleans, the Caribbean, and Southeast Asia. ZAGAT called it one of America's top restaurants. The New York Times once declared it "the reason many come to Cape May."
We brought a dry Alsatian Riesling that cut through the richness of the signature Thai-spiced shrimp perfectly. The carriage house setting — exposed beams, candlelight, lush greenery — makes it feel like dining in a secret garden. It's seasonal (typically May through October), so check ahead.
Verdict: The most adventurous dining experience in Cape May. Go once for the atmosphere alone.
3. Maison Bleue Bistro — The Hidden Gem
We almost skipped [Maison Bleue](https://thehughcapemay.com/dining/) because it's tucked inside The Hugh bed and breakfast on Washington Street and easy to overlook. That would have been a mistake. The French bistro menu — moules frites, duck a l'orange, croque monsieur — is executed with the kind of quiet confidence that only comes from a chef who genuinely loves what they're cooking.
We brought a Côtes du Rhône that was practically made for the duck. The candlelit dining room, with its exposed brick and low ceilings, is the most romantic setting of any restaurant we visited. Reddit users have been calling this "hands down one of the best restaurants in Cape May right now," and after our dinner, we agree.
Verdict: The best value on this list. Bring a French red and settle in.
4. Sapore Italiano — The Comfort Choice
[Sapore Italiano](https://www.saporeitalianocapemay.com/) in West Cape May is the kind of Italian restaurant you wish existed in your own neighborhood. The handmade pastas are exceptional — we ordered the tagliatelle with wild mushroom ragù and the pappardelle with braised short rib, and both were exactly right. The restored Victorian home setting is cozy without being precious.
We brought a Chianti Classico Riserva that paired beautifully with both dishes. The service was warm and unhurried, which is exactly what you want on a Saturday night when you're not in a rush to be anywhere.
Verdict: The most reliable BYOB on the list. Perfect for a relaxed, unhurried dinner.
5. Tisha's Fine Dining — The Crowd-Pleaser
[Tisha's Fine Dining](https://tishasfinedining.com/) has been a Cape May institution for decades, and it shows in the best possible way. The menu spans Italian, New American, and seafood — there's something for everyone at the table, which makes it the ideal choice for groups with different tastes. The lobster ravioli is a signature dish for a reason.
We brought a Napa Chardonnay that worked well across the menu's range. The dining room is comfortable and well-appointed without being stuffy. Open year-round, which makes it a go-to for off-season visits.
Verdict: The best choice for mixed groups or anyone who can't decide what they're in the mood for.
6. Union Park Dining Room — The View Winner
[Union Park Dining Room](https://www.hotelmacomber.com/union-park-dining-room) at the Hotel Macomber on Beach Avenue has the best front porch in Cape May. On a warm evening, watching the sun set over the ocean while working through a bottle of rosé is about as good as it gets. The food — casual fine dining with an emphasis on local ingredients — is solid without being spectacular.
We sat inside (the porch was full), which diminished the experience somewhat. The menu is refined but plays it safe compared to the more adventurous kitchens on this list. That said, the ocean view from the porch is worth the visit on its own terms.
Verdict: Go for the porch, stay for the sunset. Bring a crisp white or rosé.
7. Iccara Italian Bistro — The Convenient Option
[Iccara Italian Bistro](https://www.iccaracapemay.com/) earns its place on this list through sheer convenience and consistency. Steps from the Washington Street Mall, it's the easiest BYOB to incorporate into a day of shopping and sightseeing. The Italian menu is approachable and well-executed — the eggplant parmigiana and the chicken piccata are both excellent.
We brought a Pinot Grigio that worked fine with the lighter dishes. Iccara isn't trying to be the most ambitious restaurant in Cape May, and that's perfectly fine. Sometimes you just want a reliably good Italian dinner without a three-week reservation wait.
Verdict: The best option when you want a good meal without the planning.
What We Learned
After seven restaurants in two days, a few things became clear. First, Cape May's BYOB scene is genuinely exceptional — the combination of no corkage fees, high-quality cooking, and intimate settings creates a dining culture that's hard to find anywhere else on the East Coast.
Second, the planning matters. Grana and 410 Bank Street both require advance reservations, especially in summer. The others are more forgiving, but calling ahead is always worth it.
Third — and most importantly — bring good wine. These restaurants deserve it.
